Letter from the Editor

Flannery O'Connor once said that a story is a "small history told in a universal light." The same could be said of poetry or art or photography—really any creative endeavor aiming to express the human experience. Artists and authors alike strive to express their message in the most effective and captivating way possible, to bring into existence a piece of power and scope. This is one of the many things we here at Unbound love about the literary arts and the reason we so strongly believe in the importance of peer editing and revision; so that we as young artists that are developing our crafts and styles can learn how to better our art, how to best convey our own histories in that "universal light." It is that community of intellectual exchange and constructive criticism that provides artists with the opportunity for creative growth and that same community that we strive to bring to the University of Oregon and Unbound.

Spotlight

The Spotlight section is a new addition to the Unbound website where we highlight one student artist in the areas of art, fiction, and poetry each term. For Spring term we've selected a poet, Noelle Petrowski, who has been published in all three of Unbound's 2011 issues. You can read more about Noelle and her poetry below!

Interview and article
by Bryan Atkinson

Noelle Petrowski's poem "Where Snow Comes From" (Unbound, Fall 2011) was perfectly fitting for the barrage of snow we received this year. As the Dogwood trees bloomed and the birds warmed up their vocal chords, the snow created a beautiful white backdrop for flowers but stifled the birds. It is those bittersweet qualities of nature that Noelle is drawn to.

"I think the bittersweet is where I'm finding myself going over and over again," she says. "I'm really inspired by nature, but I also think that humans screw it up a lot. I think that's often something I play with."

Unbound

Unbound is a student run online literary arts magazine at the University of Oregon that publishes undergraduate and graduate student work in the areas of art, fiction, and poetry. Unbound was founded in 2008 as a Clark Honors College thesis project and evolved into an online student publication after its founding members' experiences with University of Oregon's Literary Editing course and the University's long-running literary journal The Northwest Review. Since it's debut publication in Spring 2008, Unbound has been publishing one online issue per Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. Unbound's mission is to offer all University students a platform for their creative work and a community that allows students to share, grow, and intellectually engage in the fields of art, literature, editing, and publishing.
